New York Contractor License Requirements

In the state of New York all construction work is regulated at the municipal level.

New York State Asbestos Abatement Contractor License

All companies working with asbestos in New York state must get a contractor license to work in an area containing asbestos. They also must:

  • Ensure that that all their employees are certified to do asbestos work.
  • Have workers' compensation and disability insurance.
  • Pay $500 to get an asbestos abatement contractor license.

The license has to be renewed on a yearly basis. New York doesn't recognize other states' licenses.

  • Architect
  • Engineer
  • Land Surveyor
  • Landscape Architects

New York City Home Improvement Contractor License

Any person or business engaged in the construction, repair, remodeling or addition to any land or building used as a residence in New York City must have a Home Improvement Contractor license. Included under this contractor license is the construction, replacement or improvement of driveways, landscaping, terraces, patios, swimming pools, fences, porches, garages and basements. Also included are other improvements to structures build on land that is adjacent to a home or apartment building.

Buffalo Contractor Licence

The City of Buffalo requires these trade licences:

  • Demolition
  • Handyman
  • Home Improvement
  • Light Commercial
  • New House Contractor
  • General Contractor
  • Sub-Contractor
  • Construction Manager

Consumers are advised to also check for municipal license requirements as contractor laws can differ from county to county. It is also advisable to double check with the state's requirements before hiring a contractor.
