License Requirements

Delaware Contractor License Requirements

The state of Delaware requires licenses for general master electricians, limited master electricians and, as well, specialty electricians. Some categories of specialty licenses are air conditioning/heating and elevators.

The State of Delaware requirements for the electrical contractor license:

Master Electrician: Applicant needs to have:

  • Four (4) years full-time work experience and two (2) years education on top of earning a high school education. or
  • Six (60 years full time work experience and no education.

Master Limited: Applicant needs to have:

  • Three (3) years full time practical training., or
  • Proof of 4,000 hours of full time experience, plus 288 hours of related instruction

Master Electrician Special: Applicant needs to have:

  • Six years full time work experience
  • Proof of 8,000 hours of full time experience

Limited Electrician Special: Applicant needs to have:

  • Three years full time work experience

The Board requires you to pass open book exam on the NFPA-70 National Electrical Code book to get a license. For the master electrician's general license it is four (4) hours long with 100 multiple choice questions; and for the limited license its is three (3) hours long with 60 questions.

Plumber Contractor License

The state of Delaware issues plumber licenses for:

Original Licensure - Journeyman Certificate:

  • Applicants need to send a complete and notarized application, along with a non-refundable application fee.
  • Applicants who already have a "Journeyman Certificate" through an approved plumbing apprenticeship program must send a copy of the certificate along with the verification of two (2) years of supervised work experience after the certificate was issued.

Original Licensure - Supervised Work Experience

  • Applicant must have performed plumbing services for at least seven (7)years under the supervision of a licensed plumber.
  • Applicant must have completed and received a passing score on the Apprenticeship-By-Pass Examination.
  • Applicant must submit a complete and notarized application and a non-refundable application fee
  • Applicants with seven (7) years of supervised work experience must submit proof .

HVACR Contractor License

For heating and air conditioning systems the state of Delaware issues Master and Master HVACR Limited licenses in:

  • Heating - forced air systems, ventilation, air conditioning and gas piping
  • Heating - hydronic systems and gas piping
  • Commercial Hood Systems
  • Refrigeration

Pump Installer's License

This is only necessary if the person doing the work is not a licensed plumber.

Land Surveyors, Architects and Engineers

All these professions need to have licensing.

Consumers are advised to also check for municipal contractor license requirements
as contractor laws can differ from county to county. It is also advised to double check with the state's requirements before hiring a contractor.
