Kansas Contractor License Requirements

Kansas does not have a contractor license for construction contractors at the state level the contractor must check for licensing requirements at the local level.

Local Contractor License

For example, the city of Lawrence requires certain contractors and tradespeople to obtain a contractor license to work within the City limits.

As well, in Topeka a general contractor requires a contractor license. The contractor must complete an application and provide proof of trade competency (skills) and of insurance. As well an original certificate of insurance with minimum of $300,000 general liability, bodily injury, property damage protection, workman's compensation and skills. For a Mobile Home Contractor license the applicant must produce an original certificate of insurance for a minimum of $500,000.

Asbestos Abatement Contractor License

Because of the harmful effects from the material the removal of asbestos is a carefully regulated industry. This is why asbestos abatement contractors are licensed at the state level.

Asbestos workers, contractors and supervisors dealing with asbestos each must obtain a contractor license for asbestos projects like removing the substance from public, school or commercial buildings. Asbestos management planners also must obtain licenses for projects in school buildings.

Each licensee must submit a copy of the training certificate signed by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-trained instructor. The contractor license to run an asbestos abatement business requires:

• Accredited Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor Course annual refresher courses
• Accredited Asbestos Inspector Course annual refresher courses
• OSHA 10 hr compliance training
• NIOSH 582 Training

Water Well Contractor License

Application: To become a Kansas Licensed Water Well Contractor an applicant has to submit the following to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE)

• Completed application
• Successful completion of a written exam
• Paying required fees to KDHE.

Renewal: The licensed contractor is required to renew his or her license annually with by re-filing with KDHE the following items:

• All well records (WWC-5 form) for each well constructed, reconstructed or plugged during the previous year of licensure
• Continuing education requirements
• Submitting the renewal fees.
