How Can You Do a Kitchen Remodel on a Budget?

While a kitchen remodel project will increase the value of your home, in some cases the budget is simply not there for a large change. Is it possible to update and modernize your existing kitchen space with only a limited amount of money? By using the right tactics and designs even a small investment can pay big dividends.

DIY or Professional Contractor?

You may think that the only way to stick to a reasonable budget during a kitchen remodel is by doing it yourself. But that decision can actually go either way.

In certain cases taking the DIY route could actually cost you more money. When complicated processes take too much time or result in expensive mistakes your small budget can get completely blown. On the other hand, hiring a contractor does not necessarily guarantee a fixed price. Changes to the job site conditions, material supply problems and plenty of other issues can cause the contractor quoted price to change.

A fairly straightforward that can be done using common tools is a good bet for the DIY route. But when your remodeling project involves more complicated structural changes, electrical projects or alterations to the plumbing then contacting the professionals is the wise move.

Facelift or Major Reconstruction

Think about the goal of your kitchen remodel. If you only want to update the look of the room consider refacing the cabinets, changing the flooring or even adding new drawer pulls and hardware. These changes may create the new look you want with very little investment required.

But if your vision of a new kitchen will require a wall bumped out or completely new cabinets, an island or the replacement of appliances, then your budget will need to reflect all of those changes. You need to have expectations that match well with the goals of your project.

Kitchens that are cramped will need added space, not just the illusion of space. And a room that has outdated fixtures and damaged cabinets may be just fine with a plumbing update and a fresh coat of paint. Assessing the objectives that you have for the renovation and deciding how to best get there will allow you to determine whether the budget you had in mind is feasible.

The overall cost is often controlled by the quality and availability of the materials. Maybe you've always wanted a granite countertop, but without the budget to invest in that material you may need to settle for something a little less pricey. Special orders tend to be more expensive. Also, never underestimate the deals you can get on scratch and dent appliances or salvaged building materials. With some ingenuity and by being in the right place at the right time you can get your hands on materials for your kitchen remodel that are priced within your budget.

It is entirely possible to complete a valuable and attractive kitchen remodel with a limited budget. The trick is knowing what you are looking for out of the renovation, deciding whether the DIY option is feasible and finding the materials that will work within that budget. It will mean that you need to prioritize and make wise decisions, but the end result will be worth it.
