Real Estate Agent vs. Selling Yourself

Is it a better idea to hire a Realtor or sell your house yourself? I know that if you go without a Realtor, then you can save money since you're not paying Realtor fees. But are you also missing out on their expertise? Or can you sell your house just as well by yourself?

Also, would a buyer be more likely to purchase a home through a Realtor? I can imagine that as a buyer, you may want to buy a home from a Realtor because the process will be more professional. But you might get a lower price with a self-seller.

In the current housing market it may be better to sell the home yourself!

Some publications won't post advertising for homes unless an agent is associated with the sale, though.

We're finally having to deal with this and we've called a title company. For better or worse, it's going to be sale by owner. Time is running out to do it!

They have a lawyer working for them who will hopefully make the whole thing rather painless.

I think it really depends on how much time you have to deal with marketing, phone calls and people who want to come by and see your house. If you know what you are doing, the savings on commissions can be huge. On the other hand, if you don't know what you're doing, you could be in for a rough time selling your house.
