My husband and I have a duplex that we rent out, and the counters are so bad. I think they are the originals from 1983. They are "white"
or some semblance thereof, if you can imagine 20+ years of stains and scratches on once-white Formica.
Anyway, I want to replace them on both sides of the duplex, but obviously, because it's a rental unit, I'm not going to be putting in granite or marble.
I want to find out about the most cost effective way to buy and install decent counter tops.
I'd say there's no more than 10-12 feet of counter space TOTAL on both sides (They have tiny galley kitchens).
I want decent quality, but nothing that I'll really get upset about if the tenants damage them.
Any thoughts?
Amanda,
For a rental unit, I would suggest the formica counter tops you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. They are durable and you can buy them in a variety of colors. You can even install them yourself without too much hassle. I personally like tiled counters, but that might be a little extensive for a rental unit.
Their's another option of using linoleum. And style it with metal edges. It is low cost and lasting though not popular choice for more permanent fixtures. Why don't you replace the formica with other newly available laminates? These days laminates come in so many varities and colors.
Well, laminate counter tops would be a practical choice. Laminate counter tops combine beauty, durability and easy maintenance with affordability. You can choose from laminates with standard finish or laminates with glossy finish.
