Bathroom Ceiling Lighting Recommendations

We have two bathrooms with florescent lights covered by metal frames and plastic panels. One bathroom has two 2 ft x 4 ft panels and the other has three 2 ft x 4 ft panels. At a minimum we would like to replace the metal frames with wood frames. But, we'd like a more attractive ceiling lighting design and are open to suggestions. What do you suggest? The one problem is that the lighting areas need to continue to be assessable to the area above them which is the crawl space between the first and second floors of our home.
