I have a small, unfinished basement that I want to renovation but I'm not sure if this is something I can, or should do myself. All I need done is framing, drywall, taping, finishing and painting. I also need one wall to block off the furnace with door access. The ceiling is open but I'm not sure if I want to close it off with drywall or leave it as is. The ceiling is too low for drop ceiling.
The basement will be finished as a playroom for our small boys so I only need basic materials. The flooring will be finished with cheap, industrial carpet. My father-in-law is a licensed electrician so I can get him to run the necessary wires and install the outlets.
Total area of the basement is about 260 sq feet.
What is the benefits of DIY Basement reno or hiring a professional contractor?
What is the estimated cost difference?
Any help and information would be greatly appreciated!
A basement because of its location is different to other rooms. Their are some things you should keep in mind. Like...
1. Air quality - Do you have any issues? What about moisture control, since this will be a children's are.
2. Heating
3. Structural concerns - You will require a professional for this.
Because its going to be used by the children, professional help could be better, though this is just a layman's advice.
I'd say go with the Pro's. My hubby decided to do our basement himself and two years later we have more problems now than we had before he started. I'm looking for a pro now to fix his mistakes before it's time to sell
