Take a direct look above the ceiling level (drywall), what is directing on top of that wall?

Number one: Consider hiring a structural engineer, before removing any walls, etc.

If you have a basement go down and check to see if there is a steel I-beam and steel poles holding the I-beam up. If that beam is under the wall than that would be, And if not you should be good to go.

See if the ceiling has any beams or not. Anyways you can never be sure enough without a structural engineer.
