So far with everything we've done to our house we have had contractors referred to us by friends. For example, we had to have our flooring replaced last year and my husband's boss 'knew a guy' who gave us a great bid, and did a fabulous job installing our new floor.
But what do we do if we don't know anyone who can refer us a contractor? We need to have some siding replaced on our house now. At this point, I'm just going to go through the phone book and get some bids.
We had a good friend who had someone rip them off for several thousand dollars on a roofing job, so picking someone out of a hat doesn't seem like the best choice.
I'm wondering if there are any methods for finding reputable contractors, or if anyone has suggestions for what to look for when you're getting a contractor.
Hi Amanda,
Try using this service. I've already posted two small repair and reno jobs on this site and found two very good contractors. Regardless of were you find a contractor, be sure to take your time, check references and license and insurance information...you must feel 100% comfortable with anyone you hire. Good Luck!
There are absolutely certain things you should look for. Roofing services are a serious investment so you need to find a good contractor. Look for someone with many years of experience and who comes well-recommended. If you don't know anyone personally, you can look up reviews online or ask the contractor for references.

When you are looking for a contractor and you don't know anyone who can recommend you, there are other ways to look. You can look online and see the reviews that contractors get. This can be a great sort of recommendation from other customers, even if you don't know them personally.
