Many people can't afford to do big improvements on their home to make it greener such as changing the windows, solar paneling, etc. So I was wondering if anyone had any tips for simple and easy-to-do things. Some of mine would include:
1. Changing your light bulbs to ones that last longer and are eco-friendly.
2. Using cleaning products that are good for the environment. They can also be good for your family since they don't contain the harsh chemicals of other cleaners.
3. Using less water. Taking shorter showers, etc.
4. Using less air-conditioning.
A lot of people don't realize this, but cleaning products contribute greatly to POOR indoor air quality. You can clean most surfaces adequately biodegradeable, non-toxic soap and water. You can also clean with vinegar and baking soda which kills germs.
Some devices use energy without being used. Any appliance in your home with a clock or a digital display is using a great deal of electricity. Also, any appliance with a box on the chord uses energy when not being used. Unplug those things when not in use and you will see a significant drop in your energy bill.
Of course using less of everything is good for the environment.
Recycle if you don't already.
Keeping the main point switched on even though you have switched off the Television uses up about 20 amps of electricity. So, when switching off the TV, switch off the main plug point too.
There are new switches that allow you to control which sockets turn off completely, and which sockets remain on for things like electric clocks and T.V.s that need power when the screen is off. They are easy to install and, from what I understand, are quite effective.
Thank you for sharing your tips Denise. There are some people who take these for granted. Little did they know that simple things like turning the lights off when they are not in use or when it is bright in the room anyway can help conserve energy.
