The laws of thermodynamics deem that heat wants to go out to the cold. And figuring that the temperature in space is -270 degrees Celsius, or -455 Fahrenheit the heat in our homes desperately wants to get out!

Along with insulation, thermal breaks prevent heat from escaping. Thermal breaks are materials which do not readily accept the transfer of heat, like plastic and foam. Modern window frames are honeycombed to allow pockets of air whereas the old aluminum windows were a "heat suck."

In small spaces plain air is a great thermal break but in between window panes it has a large area to move around and transfer heat outside.

Putting a plastic sheet on the inside of your windows cuts heat loss dramatically. because of this window companies are placing plastic panes in between the glass panes.

To find out more about plastic sheathing on windows contact your local hardware store.
