If you have basement walls that are exposed concrete then the winter's cold is sucking the heat right through them. Concrete is a thermal mass which absorbs heat and if the other side of the wall is the cold ground then you might as well have a wooden wall with no insulation. If you have a basement window then the heat transfer increases.

One easy to way keep heat from going outside the basement is a simple emergency blanket you can buy from the hardware store. The 53" X 82.5" sheets are aluminized polyester and reflect between 80% and 96% of the body back into the body. These cost between $1.50 and $2.50, taxes in.

For your exposed basement wall each sheet is 30 square feet so for under $10 you can cover an entire, 20' X 8' wall. Of course the inside of your basement will look like a spaceship but you will get the savings.

These blankets also work well in any areas where there is a cold spot from lack of insulation or a window that's not being used.
