With the amount of pollutants floating around in the outside, city air it's sure great to be able to go indoors to save your lungs. Smog is still a major health risk and it doesn't look like it will improve in the near future.
However, you are going from one polluted area into another. because your home's air may not be as clean as you think.
Even if you bough one of those great HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters for your air conditioning system you still may not be out of the danger zone, especially if you have allergies. because HEPA filters only get particles down to 0.3 micrometers which does not include some pretty nasty stuff.
Electrostatic filters work by positively charging the particles and whipping them through a negatively-charged catching plate. This catches pollen and mold spores and minute insects.
So check your filter and see if it doing the job for you.

It's important too to remember to replace your air filters on a regular basis. Not doing so means your AC needs to work so much harder and that's just money down the drain. Check what kind you have, the size and recommended replacement times to keep it running at optimal efficiency. You can pick the most common sizes up fairly cheaply at Wal-Mart.

In addition to keeping the air clean, a new filter will help the air conditioning unit run more efficiently. This will help your home cool down more quickly, and you can save on energy. It can save you a lot of money over the course of the summer!
