Many people think the only thing shutters are good for is to create tension in an old black-and-white film. A banging shutter meant that the wind was picking up and a bad storm was coming as shutters were usually locked to the side of the building. (It also foreshadowed the death of a non-important character!)
But shutters are a great way to dress up you home's windows. In the old days shutters, as there were no windows, were used for security and to protect the home from storms and cold but today shutters add an old world elegance to the home. Available in many colors and styles shutters add a colorful frame to the window tying together the tones from roofing, trim, doors and siding. In fact many realtors have shown that shutters both increase the value of a home and help it sell faster.
There are also interior shutters which can be custom-fitted to your window. These can fold open on hinges or be operated like venetian blinds. The benefit of this type of blind is that it can be used to provide a barrier to the sun's rays, thus cutting down on the air conditioning bill, or acting as barrier to heat loss through the window.
Many homes have shutters as decorative accents, but looking at their original purposes, I can see how having working shutters, even in this day and age, could be a real plus.
With this in mind, I wonder if shutters, exterior or interior, can be construct to add a level of insulation to existing windows? Has anyone made any shutters that to this?
