Im planning on building a 16x 16 gabled patio cover. I want a brick column at each corner. Each column measuring 2 foot square and about 8 feet high. I will have 6x12 x 16" cedar beams resting on top of the columns for my joists to build rafters on. Should I build the brick columns first and then put beans on top or support the rafters with vertical 6x 6 posts and then brick last? Some people are saying, brick last, it's just cosmetic, but then what will my joists rest on before columns are built?
