If you were to ask any real estate agent what is the single best renovation for the biggest return on money spent the answer would be a quality paint job.

Compared to any other renovation e.g. bathroom remodeling, kitchen remodeling, deck-building painting is pretty cheap. You can get the whole inside and outside of the home done professionally for less that $5,000. And that includes: advice from a designer to pick the right colors for the size, shape and lighting of the rooms and curb appeal of the exterior.

Professional painters can save you a lot of time and effort:

*They have the right equipment ladders, *scaffolding, drop sheets, painting tools, etc.

*They have insurance

*They can fix problems before they begin moisture, nails, things you can't see.

*They do preparation work cleaning, sanding, repairing the surface

*They clean up

*They know how to paint

Many people like painting and do a good job. However, professionals do it for a living and know that their reputation is on the line. So, if you hire a competent tradesperson he or she will know that business depends a lot on referrals so every job is a showcase. And always get at least 3 estimates detailing everything you want done - clean-up, prep work, type of paint, time-line, etc.

Interior painting is one of the things I would suggest someone to do on their own to save money. It takes some time, but is very easy to learn and do. I've painted many interior walls and actually enjoy it. My biggest advice would be to not skimp on prep time. Spending careful time making sure the painter's tape is right, the tarps are down, etc, will be definitely worth it once you start painting.

Yes, I agree. It is also a very good 'bonding' mechanism between couples and friends. A group project. Preparation though is the key. Though, you are saving money on the paint job, don't scrimp on the tools. Buy good rollers and good paint. One can avoid frustrations this way.

Something people forget is that interior painting immediately freshens the house. Old smells that might be clinging to walls and curtains are almost totally over powered by drying paint.

It makes the home smell new.
