Be cautious of who you hire. I hired Precision Piping from Kankakee , IL to replace a gas line from my house to my pool, (about 210’). They were kind enough to come out the day I smelled the leak and Nicor confirmed it. They charged me $237 and said they would contact me to give me an estimate to replace the line. I called them three times before someone actually got back to me. They quoted me no more than $2400 and said they could get to it right away. I informed both men that came out that there were gas, water, and electric running in or near the same location. After several more calls to them they finally showed up to do the work. I informed the two men who were doing the work about the other utilities running underground to the same location. I had to leave for an appointment and when I returned the men told me that they had hit my electric line. Upon inspection, they not only hit it once, but 3 times. I asked why they didn’t stop after the first break and was told the trencher was only rented for 4 hours and they had to get it back. The men working told me to call an electrical contractor, which I did and they came out and spent 4 hrs to temporarily repair it($800). The electrical contractor told me to call the office to get an estimate to replace the electric line. When I called, they told me that if they had caused the damage they would be responsible for repairing it. They suggested I replace the electric line and put it in conduit. The conduit was $700 more but I thought I should do it correctly. When I contacted Precision Piping I was told they weren’t responsible because they didn’t have X-ray vision so they couldn’t know there were other utilities. I reminded the man I talked to that I had informed him and the man that initially came out about the other utilities buried underground. After much belittling me from him, he said to get it fixed and call him back. I did and he said he wasn’t making anything on the job so couldn’t do anything for me. I asked to speak to the owner and he told me he would talk to them. He called me back and said the owner agreed to take $500 off the price. This seems hardly fair to me. I am now more than paying double the price for this job. To make matters worse, Precision Piping didn’t replace the dirt in the trench they made. They said the electrical contractor asked them not to but the electrical contractor told me later he asked them not to fill in the trench where the electric line was broken. The guys from Precision Piping sat on my back porch for a couple hours while the electrician worked. The left at quitting time and left the trench open. The electric contractor tried very hard to fix the gas contractors trench. I got an estimate of $2750 to repair the damages from a landscaper. I certainly couldn’t afford this.
