Troubleshoot Remote Garage Door Opener

If I push the button on the remote opener to close the garage it may only travel a few inches or sometimes a few feet and then reverse it's direction to open the door. And then sometimes the remotes works just fine. But if I keep my finger on the indoor button control attached to the house / wall inside the garage door will close all the way.
I changed the batteries in my remote, but the problem persist. What should I do next?
