Garage Storage Made Simple

Renovating your garage into something other than a dumping spot for your personal possessions makes sense for both the organization of the entire home and peace of mind. Many garages have space for two and even three cars, but most of the area is piled high with sports equipment, camping supplies and boxes of Christmas decorations that couldn't be stuffed in the attic. If this the case in your home then you are missing out on a golden opportunity to claim hundreds of square feet of sheltered space for your home.

Many of the boxes that are stored in the garage contain possessions that you might need to get to in a pinch: tools, gardening supplies, tools, reference material. By building proper storage facilities you can get the boxes off the floor and into an order where they can be easily found.

Side Shelving: This can be as easy as building shelves with 2 X 4 foot framing and 1 X 3 strapping for the surfaces. By using 16 for shelf height you can get up to 6 shelves. Running this along the side of the garage will give you between a 12 and 16 shelf width and still have a decent swing to the car door. You can leave room near the garage door for racks to hang long garden tools.

Front: Most garaged have an under-utilized tool bench that takes up a lot of room and offers little storage. Check the local building supply and look over the storage options for this area. They include metal and plastic storage lockers that provides for bench area and hanging accessories to sort and display tools.

Above: If you have 12' ceilings there is an opportunity to create a loft for storing large boxes and festive decorations. This requires placing beams above the garage door frame but the added space will be worth it.

Having an organized garage can make your hobbies, activities and home life so much better.

I saw a nice rack at a friend's home that raises things, usually bicycles, as high as the garage rafters, freeing up floor space. They look quite handy and I am always looking for storage gadgets.

My main concern is the amount of weight that may end up hanging from the rack once helmets, and anything else kids might pile on, are added before raising the bikes to the storage position.

Does anyone know of accidents from over loading these types of racks?

yeah sure heard it a few times. but still, using common sense will help, i mean most people will put bicycles, paints and so on which is heavy on the floor right? only some things on the rack.
