Fireplace construction

I am building a fireplace in the corner of a room. Do I need a "smoke shelf"? Most conventional fireplaces have the smoke shelf, but I notice that fireplaces open on two to four sides seem to work fine with a straight flue and a damper.

The chimney will extend well above the top of the roof line and there are no trees near the chimney.

When is the smoke shelf necessary, if at all?
