The 2008 Olympics in Beijing have done more than attract athletes to the Forbidden City. Many North American decorators have been dabbling in Chinese culture for colors and textures to bring back home.
Trends such as bright reds bordered with yellows and gold are being projected for feature walls in specialty rooms complete with shimmering draperies. In the forefront are carved, Chinese chests and artifacts.
In the bathroom, rattan cabinets and accessories look right at home against a shower curtain with Chinese symbols meaning tranquility and harmony. Bright red toweling with gold, garish dragon images complete the Oriental flavor. The rugs can also be a bright red.
Bedrooms are also not immune. The bed is framed by rich draperies which denote someone of royal lineage. In other words, it's fun and regal at the same time!

My cousin's house follow an Asian theme. She is married to a Chinese and most of the furnitures and even fixtures at their home is Chinese inspired. Most of those items were bought in China.
I've always loved Chinese themes. It's quite a difficult look to get right without making it look too cheesy. I think a few well placed items and pictures in the more subtle shades of deep red and bamboo with a few gold touches look good. It's far better than going for the eyeball burning scarlet everywhere you could shake a chopstick at in my opinion. Unless you want to look like a Chinese restaurant, less is more. :) You can get beautiful silk screens too.
