When a contractor measures to tape and texture, does he include doorways and windows in his square footage?

When a contractor measures to do tape and texture this is a new house, does he measure everything such as door areas and window areas? He said yes because all that needs to be covered. He measured 6866 square feet. We remeasured and subtracted the windows and doorways and got 5300 square ft, so we think we should only have to pay for the actual square footage. Would like to know who is right.
