Red Cedar Siding

Bevel siding is the most commonly-used clapboard. It is made by taking a 2 thick piece of board and sawing it diagonally into 2 pieces where one edge is thicker than the other. This siding is then installed horizontally for the classic clapboard look. It is available in a rustic knot look or a smooth clear patina which gives a stately look to any home.

The siding is also made now in a finger-joint edging in which once the bottom piece is level the rest of the boards go up level.

Cedar siding has a great advantage over the other woods in that is can be left to weather into a beautiful silver color. In addition it never has to be painted or stained in any way and will last longer than the installer.

A trick for those who love the red look is to pre-coat the siding with transmission fluid. The oil-based product is red in color and brings out the red in the side. Each year you just have to spray the siding with more of the fluid to maintain its quality and look.

Are you a car mechanic trying to get rid of old barrels of transmition fluid.

We are in the time of green construction and you may be still soaking your fence post in motoroil??

Thanks for the great information. I have cedar siding on my home and love it. It holds up well and is a beautiful wood. I take great care of it, so I expect it to last a long time. Cedar siding is a great investment.
