We are putting new countertops and backsplash with existing cabinets. When the original countertops were removed the wall behind sustained a lot of damage. Should the contractor temporarily remove the cabinets to completely repair the wall behind the cabinets and countertop or is it acceptable to leave the cabinets in place and patch the wall with compound, foams and pieces of sheet rock?

Thanks
