We are in the middle of remodeling our home and are trying to decide on using Hardwood flooring, bamboo flooring or carpet throughout the main level and basement. i've heard a lot of great things about bamboo flooring but also heard that it can cost a lot more than most hardwood and carpet. Because we have two young kids we are leaning towards the hardwood or bamboo because we think it will be easier to maintain...is this true? Is hardwood easier and cheaper to maintain then carpet? What about a combination of wood and carpet? We are looking for suggestions and information on all three options. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would be concered with a low quality bamboo in a basement. Also with the explosion of bamboo floors new cheaper bamboo is hittig the market, so you get what you pay for. I could talk pages about bamboo. Carpet seem to help promote alergies, mold mildew in basements. Hardwood or enginered hardwood that makes a difference. and if you didn't have enough to consider acid staining or concrete overlays may be a nice opption for you. Hae you ever had any leeks or smells of mildew in your basement. for upstairs moisture isn't usually a factor its traffic flow. How manny people and guest you have. Carpet is usually great for bedrooms. and most hardwood and bamboo floors are not made for a bathroom, some are. So good bamboo will cost, but so will good hardwood. Carpet is pretty good, dirt and the padding determine the life of carpet. The heavier the pad the longer it lasts, less flexing. I hope I helped a little and not totally confussed the issue.

I definately would not recommend carpet with kids!

You might also want to consider the new concrete flooring which is painted! It is very cost effective and pretty!

I don't know much about the bamboo, but I have hardwood and I love it! Very easy to keep! I also have a terrazo flooring in my sunroom which is low maintence and would be good for kidsto play on!

My floors are carpeted, but reading this thread has made me curious. What would some of the advantages be of bamboo flooring? I've never reallly checked into it, but it sounds intriguing.

Natural hardwood flooring is definitely one of the most beautiful and top grade flooring materials you can choose. However, it is also very expensive and often out of the budget range of many homeowners. In many cases, it may not even be practical, especially if you have an active family with children and pets running around the house. Solid wood floors require substantial maintenance to ensure their continuing good condition and longevity. For floors that are going to suffer a lot of soiling and wear and tear, a synthetic alternative such laminate flooring might actually be a better choice.

I'm asthmatic so I pulled all the carpets out of my last house completely to keep the dust-mites down. I chose to go hard-wood floors in high traffic areas and tiles in wet areas. It's not so expensive when you consider the cost of an asthma attack...

I would not recommend Bambu if you have 2 little kids.

bambu is a soft wood and it will be to easy to get scratched.

For the basement area I would suggest laminate ot ceramic tile flooring. They can also be good on your budget and there are a ton of options.

Upstairs it will be more choice by your taste and budget but here again i would not use Bamboo.

I would strongly recommend hardwood floor. It is a beautiful flooring that is easy to maintain. You can easily sweep or mop it if your children spill something. All you need to do is keep it clean and get refinishing done every few years.
