Decks = Instant Gratification

Decks are probably the easiest way to increase the value of your home while adding in an entertainment value in the process. Unlike bathroom remodeling and kitchen remodeling there are very few rules to follow when designing and building a deck.

The only considerations that you need to know are the property covenants, property line limits and building codes for the structure. Otherwise, you can build what you want. Many decks are multi-leveled and can encompass a wide variety of features including built-grills, planters and hot tubs.

The type of material you use depends on where you live and the main use for the deck. Wood is still the hands-down favorite with cedar, redwood and pressure-treated wood taking the bulk of the work. Plain wood needs too much maintenance and is susceptible to insects and rot if not properly coated.

Composite decking is a plastic-wood product which resists rot and will last for years longer than even pressure-treated wood. Vinyl is making inroads as well but ultraviolet rays can break down the finish.

The best idea is to ask you local building supply what works best for your area and then do your own pricing. Also, in most areas if you are going above 4 feet in height you'll need a permit so check this out before starting to build.

You're are so right. We added a deck to our house and it is just so nice to have. I think that it has made our house look so much better. Just make sure you check into any restrictions your county may have before building.

I'd really like to add a deck to our new house but it may be a while until we can actually get it done. Checking on the building codes is very important, yes.

The place where I'd want to have a deck is currently part of our parking area, though, so I'm just not sure how well it would work or if it can even be done.

Hi Katharina,

Good points. That's why you should have some professional opinions. And don't just go with one, get at least 3 - 4. Just post your project on this site.

Good luck,

I agree. Decks could make our homes look better. Of course, it depends on the quality. Specifically the aesthetic quality. We do have a deck and I really could not imagine how our house would look like without it.
