bed room creation/ room partition

I recently rented a studio apartment from a friend. It is a guest house type housing. They have always claimed it to be a game room. I was just wondering if it is possible to build a "bedroom" for my one year old. I don't actually need it to be a bed room, just a separate section. My question is whether or not it is ok for me to set up some drywall and studs, as long as they don't reach the ceiling. There would not be a window or door, just simply an opening. I was also thinking about using cables to attach to the ceiling studs so the wall will not fall over. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Mike,

If you really don't want to tick off your friend, ask if you could do this first. That would go a long way in your relationship. If you want just a simple fix for this, try to find some inexpensive room divider screens. they would be alot less work and can be removed with ease.

yes getting permission first is always advisable.... lol

But yes you can put up a partition wall out of studs and drywall. as long as it is fastened to the other existing walls, and the floors. I would make it at least 8' tall with a maximum doorway opening of 36" you can even put up a door or just make it a doorless entry. Goodluck with your project Mike...

Oh Yeah try to put it in a corner for the most stabillity, and also when done with construction of wall nail a 2x8 flat on the top plate of the wall and make it a nice shelf if you have 10+ ceiling heights.
