I recently purchased a balloon house that was built in 1910. It is 2 stories, and the exterior walls are 2x4's that extends from the brick foundation, to the eves. I want to make the 2nd floor a large entertainment room with no walls, and the ceiling vaulted to the peak of the roof. So my question is, how much support can I remove, or how much do I need? The 2x4's in the current ceiling run from wall to wall, and are scabed together in the center. Are these supporting the roof and exterior walls, or can they by removed? I am thinking of dropping a large beam in the center of the house and running it all the way from the basement to the peak of the roof. Would that be enough support for the roof and walls?
Thanks for any help,
