Carpet is one of the most unfriendly commodities on the planet, from its manufacture until its removal and disposal. Why? because when most carpets are made the chemicals, or volatile organic compounds (VOC's), off-gas for months afterward. When the carpet is old and the owner wants to get rid of it, it is thrown in a landfill.

So, what can you do with old carpet?

1. Weed suppressor under a porch.

2. Pond liner

3. Greenhouse - line the concrete floor

4. Basement Floor - line the utility room floor

5. Cat Scratch Fever - use pieces for protection against cat scratches.

6. Animal Shelters - use carpet to line cages.

7. Runners - good stretches of carpet can have edges sewn and used for runners on tile or hardwood floors.

8. Garage or Workshop Floor - it's cold on the feet in those places.

The good news is that there are more and more carpet recycling places opening up so look for them.
