One of the best products you can use for your floor is made from the same material as the stopper in your wine bottle cork. Cork is an amazing product because it can be placed in so many areas of the home. It is easy on the feet and, when sealed, becomes a water-proof surface. It is also rated to go over in-floor, radiant heating systems.

Another great thing about cork is that the product comes from the bark of a living tree. Depending on the area where it is harvested the bark can be taken every ten years making it a very green product.

Cork can also be stained and formed into patterns. It usually comes in tiles which are glued down and sealed. As well, the cork surface can be refinished, stained and sealed again if the style and color of the home's interior changes.

I have heard that cork flooring is beautiful and looks similar to hardwood flooring. After proper sealing it does not look like the cork of a bulitin board, but rather, has a coated finish. I would love to try cork flooring, I am considering it when we replace our floors again.

Here's something more on cork. It has been used for more than 100 years as a housing material. As a floor covering, cork is durable, provides acoustical and thermal insulation, cushions the foot, is resistant to moisture damage and decay and is easy to clean.

Cork is highly abrasion resistant on it's own and treating it with a protective finish further increases its durability. Cork has a tremendous amount of "memory" and recovers well from compression. Cork floors will last as long as most hardwood floors.
