Leather Floors

Have you ever wondered what ever happens to the leather seats from the thousands of junked cars and trucks every year? Because these days even pickup trucks and minivans have the seat cover that used to be the private domain of the luxury cars. And leather is not cheap.

There are now companies recycling this rare commodity. And unless you are a vegan you must be happy that the leather from a Cadillac is not rotting in a landfill. Well, shoes aren't the only thing that's touching the floor any longer.

The newest rage in floor coverings is leather. Why not? Leather used to be the preferred covering for desks and seats why not the floor. And the "green" promoters will like the way this is done.

Leather from old furniture, jackets and car seats is sent to a mill where it ground up. Natural adhesives are added to the granules and the mash is rolled into a hard sheet that can be embossed with artificial grains that resemble a piece of untouched leather. This is then cut into planks or tiles and backed with natural substances like cork.

Leather floors look great, are easy to clean and easier to install. When in place the surface is soft for those who walk around in stocking feet and, on cold days, it warms the feet.

The colors and textures are endless but even marks and scratches will add to the character.
