The late summer lets us know that the fall is coming by shooting us a few cool bursts in the morning. You can feel the cold drafts without going outside. But can you pin-point them? Before you do any more exploring it's time to get out your tool belt.
The best caulking for all-around and exterior use is acrylic latex. Get a dozen tubes of good-quality, low-shrinkage type. Now the gun. You don't want a type from the dollar store. Ask at the home store which one would be the best for the money. And get one with an attached probe to pierce the tube liner.
Place the caulking gun in your tool belt and begin at the front door. Check all the seams around the door. Working clockwise move to the left and check all seams and small areas where bugs could get in to nest. Do the same with the windows and get up on a step ladder to check the flashing. This is also a good time to do touch up painting.
On the inside, go around the baseboards and feel for drafts. You'd be surprised mow much wood can shrink and warp in one one season. If you feel a draft it might be best to take off the baseboard and do a good job of sealing.
Now go around every window and, if necessary take off the moldings do a good job.
Check fireplaces, bathroom vents, dryer vents and other external orifices for leaking air.
By taking a half day to carefully go over your home you will save heating costs.
