July 27, 2015 I called Mr. Jim Lancaster of Lancaster Heat and Air. I had used him a few years ago and was extremely pleased with his work and price. Recently I have been having some issues with my downstairs a.c. unit. It was working, but not cooling properly. I called Mr. Lancaster and he came the same day. We walked under the house to look at unit. He pointed out numerous issues and stated that I needed new unit. He could do the work for $2400 but he usually charges $2800 but since I have used him before, he would do it for less. I told Mr. Lancaster that I was not in a position to purchase a new unit for that price so could he look and see if there was any temporary fix to the problem of not cooling well. Again, the unit WAS working. He went outside and came back in with a small part stating that he had broken it off. He also stated that the existing Freon had escaped when he "broke" the valve. He said "it could have happened to anyone". He said that the unit was not inoperable without this part. He used an analogy of me opening my kitchen door and the handle coming off. I disagreed with that analogy as if I had broken something in my OWN home, I would have to fix it and it was my responsibility. Him breaking the valve off was HIS responsibility. He again advised the new unit. I asked him if he could not find the part and repair what HE had broken. He said possibly but it would be difficult. He never took responsibility for breaking the part and said it wasn't his fault. I offered to go online and google the part if that would help. He gave me the part number. I told him that my husband was going to be displeased that he had broken a part rendering the unit inoperable. He left and I was truly under the impression that Mr. Lancaster was going to do the right thing and find the part and repair what he broke. Then things got crazy. I texted him and asked the name of manufacturer so I could search for part. He texted this long message without even answering my question. I gave my husband Mr. Lancaster's number to communicate with him. Mr. Lancaster sent me another text which I forwarded to my husband and asked that Mr. Lancaster text him further messages. That started a very bizarre conversation. In one test Mr. Lancaster told my husband "I will find the part if I have to fly to L. A to get it". In another text, he stated "you find the part and I will work you into my schedule". There were several more texts back and forth. Bottom line is that Mr. Lancaster came into my home, broke a part and denied it being his fault and did not fix it. We ceased communication with him as we obviously were not getting anywhere. We called another company for an estimate. Turns out, the unit was inoperable but a new part was not needed. The technician with the other company replaced the part and had my unit up and running and cooling better than before in less than an hour. It is my opinion that Mr. Lancaster wanted to sell me an entire unit and purposefully rendered my unit inoperable. This was a very poor way for Mr. Lancaster to do business. Actually, it was quite bizarre.
