Jesse Johnstone is amazing at giving you the best price all wrapped up with a friendly smile and endearing personality...you think you hit the jackpot. We needed an addition put on our house for my grandmother to move into because she didn’t want to live in a nursing home after she fell. He assured us in June that it would be done in January, maybe even by Christmas. He gave us a price that beat our other offers by 30,000 so we were thrilled and signed the contract. Looking back I should have paid attention to all the red flags that popped up starting on literally week 2 when he had to find a new mason to finish the foundation because the first one said he wasn’t going to work if he wasn’t going to be paid. (This also happened with the electrician later on, who came back to our house to explain how Jesse never pays the people that work for him). Jesse would MAYBE come to work on the addition 2 days a week from 9-12 if we were lucky. The only days he was sure to show up were the days he was asking for a check. He would do some random thing like start our dormer so he could get paid for that activity, but then not have a window to finish it...my son had hole in his roof covered by a tarp from November - March. He had to sleep downstairs. I begged Jesse to please just finish the dormer so he could have his bedroom back...he would say “yeah! Next week I promise!” Then nothing. January can and went...not even close to done. He asked me if he could change my vaulted beamed ceilings in my family room to a coffered ceilings to save himself 30,000 on something having to do with the AC...I loved the coffered ceiling look so I said that was fine. I never got coffered ceilings. It has cost me $70,000 to fix the mess he left us with and I STILL don’t have a COA. He tried to save money on siding by doing it himself and it’s all falling off now a year later. The tile in my shower and laundry room is all popping up because he didn’t tile on flat ground, all the molding inside is coming off, he left me without doors, my yard was an actual disaster, he left my sons room unfinished with outdoor lights hanging off the wall that he never took off, he never installed a lalli column to hold up the foundation. He said he put drains around the foundation to prevent flooding except when my entire basement flooded because he skipped waterproofing my foundation to save money, the guy who came to fix it said when he dug up the drains to fix them, there were none. He had lied. He didn’t end up finishing until June. My grandmother never made it in, she deteriorated so much over the year she spent in assisted living and died in June as well. Maybe if he came to work more then 3-6 hours every other week, he would have stayed on track. We paid him everything and he left without finishing. The building inspector said he had never seen such a mess. The people who had to fix his sloppy mess said they had never seen such crappy work. I went to a lawyer to see if we could try to get money back from him...but the lawyers said to get in line. There are 26 other people ahead of us suing him for the same exact thing. Oh, and he also left my sick, elderly neighbor with no bedroom because he never finished it and walked out on the job. She’s been sleeping on her couch for over a year, still leaving him messages hoping he will come back and finish. He’s a horrible person...and I liked him so much that I couldn’t even believe that he was bad until he was gone. I really believed he would never leave my house that way. Please save yourself...you’re going to like him, but he will take your money and run...
