Just like the previous review, Randy Collins, now of "All Day Handyman" said he needed the majority $$ up front and eventually all of the almost $11,000 to continue work. Remodeling of our bathroom has taken over five weeks and we still do not the floor in, the shower is but a skeleton of itself, trash is scattered about our yard and he has failed to show up at a reasonable time for work 23 or the 26 days. He refused to return any money, though his contract says clearly states he must complete all work to the customer's satisfaction prior to receiving the final payment. He has used substandard workers when he has used any workers at all. He has questioned me about my religious preference, made disparaging remarks about the heritage of some workers. I am bringing suit against him. He hasn't paid any subcontractors hired on the job.
Randy convinced us to start 3 months earlier then we had originally planned because he said that he had a crew who was "hungry for work" and said he would be done in a month. His crew turned out to be him, and one other person. We had assumed (wrongly) that the work crew would be out at least every day, weather permitting, to work on our deck. He basically showed up fine for the first week, after that it was whenever he wanted to, with no communication to us. When we questioned him about this he simple told us he doesn't work hourly. In fact one week he only showed up one day because as he informed us “his worker was in jail for a DUI and he needed to come up with the bail money to get him outâ€. It was only after we basically told him no more money unless you return our calls that he actually started to, sort of.
After we had signed the contract he informed us that we would need to purchase most of his tools since he wanted to do a good job, so we made an agreement that one of the draws would be the payment for the tools with the understanding that the tools would stay in our possession until the job was finished. That also was wrongly assumed, some stayed some were gone. As of today all have been removed and the job is still not complete.
In the contract we stipulated that he had to apply for and get a permit from the City and/or County which ever was needed. Since our HOA required a copy of it and we would be fined “per day†until it was provided. That never happened until we physically went down to the permit office with him to apply for the permit, several weeks after he had told us he had applied for the permit. He said his wife forgot to mail in the paperwork? We simply ate the HOA fees since by this time he had basically used up most of the draws and we had a yard full of materials and no way to put a deck together. Yes we had to purchase all the materials which was fine, except that he purchased everything for the job at the beginning and left all the materials in our yard. And since he never communicated to us we had no idea from one day to the next if he was going to show back up and finish the job.
He led us to believe that he had experienced people to install the French door and do the stamped concrete work that were part of the contract. The person who installed the French door installed it incorrectly and now Randy says he can’t get a hold of the guy to fix it, so we are just stuck with a 3†gap and a crooked door. The concrete work still has not been done. He kept saying that he would meet my husband at the concrete place to go over the designs, when my husband showed up (at the requested time) Randy had left already because evidently the stampers cost around $4,000.00 or you can rent them for several hundred, which of course he expected us to pay for. Randy told us his “concrete guy†said they were $25.00.
Since we finally did get the permit we expected the inspector to show up since Randy said he had scheduled it, he didn’t after calling the permit department we found out there was no inspection scheduled under his name or ours. We scheduled the appointment and told Randy when it would be but he didn’t bother to show up for it. What was built of the deck failed.
He keeps telling us that he will arrange for the roofer to come out and finish the enclosure, the electrician to run the wiring, and someone to do the concrete (we just told him to do a plain slab). Nothing ever happens. We have no leverage over him to complete anything since he has taken all the tools and all of the draws, we are terrified to say anything to him because he could just walk away and leave us with a partially completed deck and a bunch of materials sitting around our yard and then we would have to pay god only knows how much money for someone else to come i
