Electricity is a powerful thing and the power supply in your home contains enough electrical current to be fatal. Because these dangers are present constantly you need to be careful when working on any of the electrical systems in your home. Even changing a light bulb should be done with certain precautions. And when you are operating power tools there are safety standards and set ups to follow.
Precautions to Practice When Dealing With Your Household Electrical System
Pay attention to the temperature around and on outlets in your home. When an outlet feels too warm to touch it could be a sign that the wiring behind the plug is faulty. The best idea is to unplug all of the cords attached and leave the outlet alone until a qualified electrician can look at it. Be sure to call for an inspection right away.
You also need to be familiar with your electrical system in order to maintain the level of safety. Keep the breakers and/or fuse boxes clearly labeled to be sure you can identify them quickly. Also, it's a wise idea to keep the area in front of the breaker panel clear of obstructions.
Never use cords or plug into outlets that have wiring exposed. This poses a very real threat and should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
When you replace fuses, always check to be sure you are using the proper size. Fuses that are too large can easily result in fires and other damage.
Remember that halogen lamps get very hot, so do not place any lamps or light fixtures with halogens near flammable materials like drapes or clothing.
Working With Electrical Outdoors
Conditions in your yard can pose dangers as well, especially when moisture is present. To be sure and avoid electrical shock have GFIs or GFCIs installed around the perimeter of your home and plug into them. These outlets will automatically interrupt the circuit in the event of a surge that could cause serious injury and even death.
If you need to use a ladder and are near overhead electrical wires, be sure the ladder is made from wood. There are many examples of serious injuries that occurred when a metal ladder was being used and a certain level of current and voltage came together to cause harm.
Safety With Power Tools
Many home improvement projects make use of power tools for speed and power. But this equipment can also be very dangerous when not handled well. Be sure to inspect the tools well before use, including the fitting and cords attached. Do not attempt to use a tool that is damaged - it isn't worth the risk.
If the cord needs to be kept in a certain position, remember to always tape them in place as opposed to stapling and nailing down the cord and risking damage and injury. Never overload an extension cord either. You're better to find another place than risk having a problem damage your equipment, the area around it and potentially yourself.
And as a general precaution you should never use a power tool without the guard fully attached.
All of the elements within the electrical system of your home present some level of danger. From potentially fatal conditions to those that will inflict pain and damage, dealing with electricity in your home is a serious endeavor. By practicing some standard safety precautions you can create a better environment for your family.
