The state of Hawaii requires that general engineering, general building contractors and specialty contractors to be licensed. As well, to do business in Hawaii he or she must have a business license.
Licensees require the following:
Documented proof of workers' compensation insurance
Documented proof of insurance.
Bodily injury liability - $100,00 for each person,
Bodily injury - $300,000 for each occurrence
Property damage liability - $50,000 for each occurrence
Address of business in Hawaii - a post office box is not acceptable
Have to pass an exam on business, law, and a trade
Electrical Contractor License
To do electrical work in Hawaii requires a contractor license.
Supervising Electrician
Four (4) years experience as a licensed journey worker electrician or equivalent
Journey Worker Electrician
Five (5) years but not less that 10,000 hours of all aspects of electrical wiring work, primarily involved in residential and commercial wiring
Supervising Industrial Electrician
Four (4) years experience as a licensed journey worker industrial electrician or equivalent
Journey Worker Industrial Electrician
Five (5) years but not less that 10,000 hours of industrial wiring work
Maintenance Electrician
One (1) year electrical maintenance wiring work or two (2) years electrical trade schooling
Supervising Specialty Electrician
Four (4) years experience as a licensed journey worker specialty electrician or equivalent
Journey Worker Specialty Electrician
Five (5) years of specialty wiring work
Plumber Contractor License
To do plumbing work in Hawaii requires a contractor license.
Master Plumber
Two (2) years experience as a licensed journey worker plumber or equivalent
Journey Worker Plumber
Five (5) years but not less that 10,000 hours of all aspects of plumbing work in compliance with the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC)
The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs also issues a contractor license in each of these specialty trades:

Pile driving, drilling, foundation
Acoustical & insulation
Plastering
Mechanical insulation
Plumbing
Asphalt paving and surfacing

Boiler, hot water heating, steam fitting Reinforcing steel
To qualify for the exam the Department requires for a contractor license an applicant needs four (4) years of full-time supervisory work experience as a journeyman, supervisor, foreman or contractor within the last ten (10) years. You can use Board-approved training for up to one (1) year of work experience.
Consumers are advised to check for additional local municipal contractor license requirements as contractor laws can differ from county to county. It is also advisable to double check with the state's requirements before hiring a contractor.
