Replacing old tiled in sink with drop in sink

What you have to do is build a top out of plywood 1" thick, do not use particle board or BC plywood, with the hole already pre-determined and cut out. Put on a layer of 1/4" durock, with the hole cut out, screw it down with treated screws. Tile it with thinset, either buy tile bullnose or fabricate a bullnose edge. Use tape so gravity doesn't send it to the floor. Wait over nite. Grout it and set the sink with pure silicone caulk. You'll need a wetsaw, notched trowel, grinder with a diamond wheel.

I come to think of this cartoon strip I seen a while ago. Where a wife and her husband are on a boat fishing. She said with all the stuff we needed to get the fish, it will cost us $85 dollars a pound. I guess that's pretty good if you catch a sunny, maybe even a bass. NOT. For the price it would cost to rent the wet saw you should just find a granite shop that has pre fabricated counters. For 200 or less you could have you and a buddy just lift it up and put it in. Don't waste money trying to save money.

You could also get a terrazzo or recycled glass countertop. Google it. You can have Atlas Tile and Terrazzo, Paladin Tile and Terrazzo, Vetrazzo, or Ice Tops fabricate it for you. It's all over the DIY networks.

Granite is old hat now. It's not worth anything like it used to be. Especially when you get green credits from the other stuff from the Government. If you want poor mans granite, investigate concrete countertops. You would still be cheaper than making a tiled countertop. The only people that have tile counters are guys that do tile. I know, I see my brothers (in tile) have them and I have one too.

It really sucks when you buy granite and your child mars it. The only counter that can "heal" from that is terrazzo or recycled glass with a surface polish. Granite production is so cheap now they put a clear epoxy coating on the stone and fabricators try to match the look of it when they polish. They won't do a surface polish and if they do you might as well buy a new one for the price.
