Kitchen Remodel

SO my question is, am I wrong to want a design for my kitchen remodel? How will I know what it is supposed to LOOK like if all I get is a bid?

We have met with an Interior Design/Remodeling company 2 or 3 times. My husband and I sat down with 2 people from the company and each scribbled out our ideas on 10-15 different blank copies of our floor plan. At this last scribble session it ended with what we all thought sounded good (NOT all on one piece of paper though) and the company said they would get an itemized detailed bid to us. We left and I was excited and expecting a deign and bid in the next few weeks.

Since then while talking with my husband about my excitement about our new kitchen design, I discovered he doesn't expect a design, just a bid. So he emailed the Co. just as a follow-up as to when we might be receiving the design and bid. The response was...we've been busy....and we will get your bid to you ASAP.

I think my husband thinks I'm ignorant as to how this works! AM I?

Who does design work with no pictures and expects you to just look at the items and their prices. Don't their contractors go by the design layout when installing cabinets, appliances, lighting etc?

No your not ignorant.....the companies your dealing with are more ignorant! they must remember they need you not the other way around.

The more bids you get the better off you'll be, you wil also know where your price should be sitting when you finally hire a contractor.

home depot and lowes will do a layout for you,but will not give you the layout to take with you, unless you buy the materials there. at least you can see what your plan looks like, but any contractor has/should have

a computer program to do layouts as well, if not look elsewhere.

Good luck and God Bless

You may contact sellers directly as well, just select the best design you desire.

As a kitchen remodeler, I have found site inspections my most useful tool. If the designers from this company don't want to see your existing space, better you find someone else for your project.

This is going to be an exhausting and very labor intensive project for both of you. Find someone who will take time for your wishes, as well as your needs.

Good Luck

A company that considers itself a "Kitchen" remodeling company should be at your house and in your kitchen before they do anything. A professional takes every aspect of your kitchen AND the rooms connected to it into account. A true professioal is not going to consider $40,000 cabinets if your house doesn't warrant it.

There's a few different sayings, my favorite is...don't put a 1000 dollar kitchen in a 500 dollar house AND vice a versa!

Yes, you should fully expect a computerized model of what it will look like. Absolutely!!! Anything less is just unprofessional and I would look elswhere.
